Ivan Kondratevich Malyshev was born in the village of Kitaigorod, now in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. In 1967, he graduated from the I.E. Repin Leningrad State Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture of the USSR Academy of Arts. In 1976, he moved to Nizhny Novgorod. He was a graphic artist specializing in landscapes and worked primarily in watercolor.
